Bungee Surfing?
So there I was, minding my own business ... taking my daily walk down the Ocean City beach, to grab some photos ... and there it was!
I saw a cord stretched out into the water, a guy standing on a skim board ... then, POW! He was off like a shot.
I looked around for the speedboat, but there were none around. Was there a like giant parachute? Nope. Not seeing that either. Just a lot of torque from this cord and dudes flying off the beach ... getting mad air hitting waves.
Obviously, I needed to find out what was going on.
Bungee Surfing Hits Ocean City
So, I couldn't really get these guys to stop long enough to do a formal interview or anything ... but this is what I pieced together:
- You walk a 20pound anchor out into the water about chest deep. There's a float on top ... so you can find it later.
- The bungee is attached and you stretch it back with like 3 guys pulling hard. (The cord has 3 handles attached).
- You set-up the board on the edge of the water, hold for just the right moment.
- The 2 "spotters" let go and you are gone ... like a shot ... hurling towards the waves.
Apparently, bungee surfing was originally intended for rivers and lakes ... here is the "official" Bungee Surfing website for more info and videos.
Honestly, it was a ton of fun to watch and a blast to do. I'm sure we're going to see a lot more bungee surfing on the Ocean City beaches.
